Unity Programming Camp
In our Unity Programming Camp, the students were introduced to the power of this amazing game engine. In our first day, we explored the basics of how to create scenes and objects in Unity. We ended the day by programming a simple ball and paddle simulation with a custom texture. In our second day, we added physics and movement to their worlds and introduced the basics of level design. On Wednesday, we finished up our “Roll-a-ball” game and began creating and designing a virtual 3-d “island” in the Unity Terrain editor. Thursday was spent polishing our work. Some boys experimented with a scoring system, others chose to add sound effects to their games and many added effects and levels to their game. A few worked on their 3-d Islands. On Friday, we began work on our final project called Space Shooter. Although time did not allow us to complete the Space Shooter game, I hope the boys will continue with the tutorial at home. They can find the Space Shooter tutorial videos at https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/space-shooter.
When they weren’t involved with programming the students relaxed by playing ping pong, kickball, swimming, board games and even booted up an old Apple IIe to play the classic game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
